Squadron Leader Tom Gleave of No.253 Squadron attacking a Junkers Ju88 high above Shoreham, Kent on 31st August 1940.
During the attack Gleave's Hurricane was hit by return fire and caught fire. He was forced to bale out with severe burns and became an early member of the Guinea Pig Club - pilots who received ground-breaking reconstructive plastic surgery at East Grinstead.
