Jupp Gärtner served with 8/JG26 during the Battle of Britain, operating from the Pas de Calais. On Friday, 25th October, 1940 during their third sortie of the day, 8/JG26 were intercepted by Spitfires from No.92 Squadron over southern England. In the ensuing battle, Gärtner's Messerschmitt 109E was hit and he was forced to bail out. He landed near Tonbridge and spent the rest of the war in captivity.
